Upconversion in lanthanide doped nanocrystals

Inorganic nanocrystals doped with lanthanides trivalent ions feature numerous unique properties, in particular nearly perfect photostability, narrow absorption and emission bands, presence of multiple long-liging energy levels, etc. It causes that anti-Stokes luminescence (up-conversion) can be observed for these materials – it means that energy of two or more photons is combined and emitted as one photon of higher energy. All this establish them as key materials in novadays applications of nanophotonics.

In our lab we study optical properties of single upconverting nanocrystals. Our main fields of interests are their interactions with plasmonically avtive materials, their thermal properties, as well as their potential for optical communication and computing.
